Winner of the 2015 South West Small Business Environment & Sustainability Award KalyaaNa Spa & Wellness Retreat is committed to providing a quality service in a manner that espouses environmental friendly best practices to minimize our potential impact on the environment. The philosophy of being kind to the environment is integrated into the holistic wellness experience which defines KalyaaNa’s endeavor to cultivate ecotourism and further enhances the tourism experience for guests. At KalyaaNa we envision sanctuaries for learning to love and respect life. We realize this mission by creating opportunities for awareness and nurturing supportive relationships that evolve from this awareness. It is our belief that, when we first focus our attention on our personal wellness, positive transformation becomes possible through engagement with the wider communities that surround us. Our Environmental & Sustainability Policy describes our approach to wellness as a core concept and how this approach affects our programs of personal well-being, social harmony, and sustainability in the natural environment.
We operate within our Environment & Sustainability Policy outlined below and all relevant environmental legislation. We put into practice our environmental and sustainability values in our everyday living. For example, we grow our own produce, raise our own animals, recycle and reduce waste where possible; and conserve energy and water where practical. Our environmentally friendly practices help us save money and resources without compromising on quality, and we actively encourage our guests and therapists involvement with our green initiatives to work as a team to achieve a common purpose, feeling a personal responsibility to lessen our carbon footprint. We actively involve all guests to help implement green practices and respect the natural environment. Guests can elect to keep their towels and bed linen for stays of more than two nights’ which saves water in the laundering and through implementing a “clean my suite” or “do not clean my suite” that espouses the environmental value of skipping an often unnecessary suite cleaning, such as electricity saved by not vacuuming. We encourage guests turn off lights, spas and appliances when not in use to further reduce in suite energy costs. Working together we can make a difference room by room.
KalyaaNa Spa & Wellness Retreat is committed to providing a quality service in a manner that ensures a safe and healthy workplace for our hosts, contractors and guests and minimizes our potential impact on the environment. KalyaaNa Spa & Wellness Retreat recycles and uses energy efficient, and water saving practices by utilizing energy saving globes, turning off power at the switches, utilizing log fire for heating which doubles as water heater, utilizing LPG gas for cooking, and turning off lights and fridges when not in use. We utilize a solar hot water system and have insulation in roof/ walls. Plumbing fixtures such as efficient shower heads and taps and dual flush toilets have been installed. As guests you can elect to keep your towels and bed linen for stays of more than one night to save water in the laundering. We limit dishwashing, glass washing, and laundering until there is a full load. We utilize water efficient dishwashers/ washing machines and plumbing fixtures that have built in flow restrictors and we check spa infrastructure regularly to avoid leaks. Water and energy consumption is monitored using meters. Bills are analyzed and reduction targets are set each quarter. KalyaaNa Spa & Wellness Retreat intends to attain an Eco Certification and plans to set up water tanks to collect rain water from the roof and solar panels to reduce energy costs are further forecast to be implemented in 2017/19.
Recycle, Reduce & Reuse
KalyaaNa Spa & Wellness Retreat reduces waste by utilizing a recycling system for paper, plastics, aluminium and glass, developing a worm farm and three bay compost bin to compost waste fruit, vegetables, peeling, coffee grounds, and egg shells which improves the soil’s fertility and moisture management, nourish helpful soil microbes, and inoculate against destructive ones. We work with suppliers to ensure that they minimize packaging and take back packaging which can’t be readily recycled (including polystyrene packaging for electrical appliances) and we purchase refillable printer cartridges that can be sent back to the manufacturer for recycling. We limit the use of single-serve products such as sugars, butters, condiments and coffee and utilize fabric rather than paper serviettes, and email to send information. KalyaaNa Spa & Wellness Retreats uses a Filtered Water System for therapeutic benefits which removes all aluminium, lead, asbestos, chlorine and sediment, from the water and produces sparkling clear, pleasant tasting and safe drinking water.

With an enjoyable walk along the meandering driveway your senses are greeted with the hypnotic sounds of native birds towards the embracing and compassionate symbol of the Namaste’ Buddha who stands to greet you. We have planted an amazing variety of native shrubs and bushes in our garden and more than 80 bird species including Western rosellas, parrots, blue wrens, honey-eaters, finches, red robins, whistlers, pigeons, kookaburras and numerous water birds, reside on our property and in the Blackwood River Valley for all or part of each year. This amazing variety of bird life has become a major attraction at KalyaaNa Spa & Wellness Retreat. Our property’s tall marri trees provide spectacular viewing of the antics and sounds of the parrots and other birds that arrive daily to bathe in bird baths and feed in the natural feeders. We encourage a broad range of bees, frogs, turtles, butterflies and other wildlife into our garden by providing a range of shelters including hollow logs, overhanging flat rocks, dense shrubs, ponds, dams and nesting boxes. We mulch our garden beds to discourage weed growth and retain water and only use natural fertilizers, manure from our animals. KalyaaNa Spa & Wellness Retreat attained the Australian Tourism Accreditation (ATAP) EcoPlus certification in December 2015. This accreditation means our organisation has been recognised as being environmentally sustainable, signalling to our customers and to the wider industry that we are committed to providing a high quality product, service and experience.
KalyaaNa Spa & Wellness Retreat is right next to Maslin Reserve. Maslin Reserve is 49 ha of bushland located just a short drive out of Bridgetown, along Peninsula Rd. The Reserve is surrounded by land cleared for housing and farming. The Reserve was created in 1923 as timber for settlers. Timber was taken and so was gravel, leaving the Reserve extensively damaged. In the 1960 all remaining, mature timber was cut down and sawn at a mill on Peninsula Rd. Mature marris were left and are now the only tall trees. Locals campaigned to retain a reserve, with the land being vested in local Shire in 1993. Despite the damage sustained by logging and the removal of gravel an environmental studied carried out in 1990 found that the Reserve contained over 160 plant species. Understory plants trigger plants, orchids, peas, wattles, native buttercups and small perennial herbs, native grasses and sedges. There are many wildflowers to see in season and a large variety of birdlife. Why not explore the native flora and fauna using your walking guide (supplied in your retreat) or picnic by one of our three dams which are just a short stroll walk from your front door!
Land for Wildlife
KalyaaNa Spa & Wellness Retreat is committed to protecting and creating wildlife habitats and became a Land for Wildlife property in 2013. Land for Wildlife is a voluntary scheme that aims to encourage and assist private landholders in Western Australia to provide habitats for wildlife on their property, even though the property may be managed primarily for other purposes. It also assists landholders to find solutions to management problems that involve protection and enhancement of wildlife habitat. The survival off your native wildlife (plants and animals) depends on the conservation of suitable habitat from which they can find food, shelter and abundant habitat now, as a means of protecting our land and wildlife into the future. By protecting habitat, however common or whatever size, we will be conserving many native species that live within it, all a part of Australia’s unique natural heritage, that is now a drawcard for people from all over the world to come and experience. The philosophy of being kind to the environment is integrated into the holistic wellness experience which defines KalyaaNa’s endeavor to cultivate ecotourism and further enhances the tourism experience for guests.
